NEW CASTLE, Del. ― Wilmington University Executive Vice President LaVerne Harmon has been named the school’s next president and will become the first Black woman to lead a university in Delaware.
Local news organizations report that the university’s board of trustees unanimously approved Harmon’s selection last week. She is slated to take the reins in July.
Harmon has worked at the school since 1989. She earned her undergraduate degree at the university before getting her doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania.
She became Wilmington University’s executive vice president in 2014.
Harmon says she is proud to have been selected and hopes she can blaze a trail for others to follow.
