Olabaniji Abanishe is the new football coach at Lincoln University, which is bringing back football after a 47-year absence.
Abanishe was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Langston University in Oklahoma for four seasons before being named to the head spot at Lincoln on Thursday. Under Abanishe, Langston, an NAIA school, averaged 38 1/2 points and 388 years per game last season.
The Lions are beginning an exploratory season in Division II.
Lincoln started playing football in 1894 and has an all-time record of 163-166-27. Lincoln won the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Conference titles in 1918, 1919 and 1924.
“I feel blessed and excited to have the opportunity to coach and teach at one of the most historically prevalent university’s in the nation,” Abanishe said of the historically black college in suburban Philadelphia. “I am excited and take pride in the fact that I will be able to lead young men on a campus that has seen the likes of Thurgood Marshall, Langston Hughes, and Nnadmi Azikiwe.”
Robert Gardner last led the Lions program in 1960.
