Crackdown happening during ASU tailgate parties

MESA Ariz.

Over the last two weeks, more than 100 Arizona State University students and people tailgating near Sun Devil Stadium have been arrested and cited for underage drinking.

And police say they won’t let up, promising that authorities will continue cracking down on underage drinking at home games.

Police said fights, injuries and underage drinking have led to more arrests on campus, but the students say they are just trying to continue a tradition they’ve been enjoying for years before games.

“It was pretty intense,” said Tiffany Nix, 23, who was attending a tailgate party on Saturday when a swarm of officers confiscated the kegs. “One kid tried to run and they grabbed him and threw him on the ground very hard.”

“We’re just trying to clean up the kids and get them under control a little bit,” said Tempe police Cmdr. Kim Hale.

Tempe police said they don’t mind using their officers on the Arizona State campus because drunken students can later get into fights or cause traffic problems.

At Tempe Municipal Court Tuesday, about a dozen neatly dressed young men and women, some escorted by their parents, showed up to face their charges.
