Mormon leader congratulates ‘stone-cold sober’ students at Brigham Young

PROVO Utah

It was the ultimate pat on the back for a teetotaling student body: Mormon church leader Gordon B. Hinckley told Brigham Young University students they are “blessed” to attend the No. 1 stone-cold sober school.

“Well, my dear brothers and sisters, you’ve done it again. This is the 10th year that you have done so. I congratulate you most warmly. I speak of the Princeton Review where you’ve come in first out of 366 colleges. You are the most stone-cold sober student body (in the country),” Hinckley said Tuesday.

“How proud you ought to feel about this designation, no smoking, no drinking, no drugs. You are living up to the Honor Code of this institution.”

Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, gave the devotional address at the church-owned school, opening homecoming week festivities.

Besides telling students to work hard and be honest, Hinckley reminded them to be chaste and not fall into temptation.

“Understand that you are being chased. Satan is chasing after you, and you’d better run as fast as ever you can,” he said.

Homecoming week events continue through Saturday and culminate with the football game between the Cougars and the Air Force Falcons at Lavell Edwards Stadium.
