UAPB faces tough nonconference matchup

Arkansas-Pine Bluff might be looking forward to a nonconference matchup and a chance to regroup.

The bad news for the Golden Lions: This weekend’s opponent is nationally ranked Southern Illinois of the Gateway Athletic Conference.

UAPB (1-2) has been sluggish in its first three games, all within the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Golden Lions appear set to start Johnathan Moore again at quarterback in Saturday’s road game. Moore took the place of Chris Wallace last weekend after Wallace last year’s SWAC offensive player of the year missed practice because of exhaustion.

Southern Illinois (3-0) is No. 6 in the Coaches Football Championship Subdivision poll. The FCS used to be called Division I-AA.

Central Arkansas (1-2), the state’s other FCS team, plays at Missouri State (2-1).

In Division II Saturday, Arkansas Tech (3-0, 1-0 Gulf South Conference) hosts Valdosta State (2-0). Valdosta State, ranked No. 4 in the AFCA Division II poll, has outscored its two opponents 110-3.

Ouachita Baptist (3-0, 1-0) hosts No. 9 Delta State (2-0, 1-0), and Southern Arkansas (2-1, 1-0) is at No. 3 North Alabama (2-0, 1-0).

Also, Arkansas-Monticello (0-3, 0-1) will try to snap an 11-game losing streak when it hosts Harding (1-2, 0-1).

On Thursday night, Henderson State (1-2, 0-1) hosts West Alabama (1-2, 0-1).

Arkansas Baptist (0-3) plays at Oklahoma A&M (3-0) in a junior college matchup.
