Cole says he won’t be just a care-taker at UMass-Amherst

AMHERST Mass.

The new interim chancellor of the Univesity of Massachusetts-Amherst says he’ll be more than just a caretaker during his year at the helm.

In his first public comments since taking the job three weeks ago, Thomas Cole told the Faculty Senate that it’s important for UMass to go forward with faculty hiring and continue its capital campaign. He also said he wants to have a list of recommendations to hand over to the next chancellor.

The former president of Clark Atlanta University is filling in after John Lombardi left to became president of Louisiana State University. Lombardi clashed with UMass president Jack Wilson and trustees over plans to revamp the five-college system.
