Police are searching for clues in the execution-style killing of a University of California, Berkeley student.
Rodrigo Rodriguez, 21, was shot four times on Sept. 16 outside a barbershop in Sacramento’s Oak Park neighborhood, police said.
Witnesses told police the shooter waited for Rodriguez in the parking lot for half an hour. After the shooting, they said, the man walked calmly to a nearby parked car, got in the passenger seat and rode away.
Police are looking at a variety of possible motives, including robbery or mistaken identity. Rodriguez, who had tutored neighborhood kids, had no criminal record and no known enemies, investigators said.
Rodriguez became the first in his family to go to college after winning a Frank H. Buck Scholarship that covers a student’s entire college education.
While at Berkeley, Rodriguez came home on the weekends to cut hair at the barbershop where he was gunned down.
“This little guy worked so hard,” said his father, Rodrigo. “I don’t so much have shock over what happened now, I just hope my son’s at peace. He’s got to be at peace.”
