International Panel to Address Latino Education at Annual HACU Conference

An international panel of experts will discuss critical issues for Hispanics in higher education as part of the annual meeting of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) set for Oct. 20-22 in Chicago.

The panel will examine the role of Hispanic higher education and how it will shape the future of Hispanic populations, say conference organizers. It brings together leaders from Latin America and Spain to share their perspectives on how to make Hispanic higher education successful.

The panel includes keynote speaker Ambassador Arturo Sarukhán Casamitjana of the Embassy of Mexico in the United States; Dr. Miguel Martínez López, education and science commissioner from the Embassy of Spain in the United States; and Dr. Julio Miguel Martín Puertas, rector of the Universidad Autónoma de Asunción, Paraguay. The moderator will be Professor Agnes Mojica, chancellor of the Inter American University of Puerto Rico in San German.

Other conference highlights will include The Latino Leadership Institute, a pre-conference event highlighting the need for next-generation Latino/a faculty, staff and administrators in higher education; and a town hall meeting on immigration reform.

The keynote speaker at the conference’s “power lunch” will be Jesse H. Ruiz, a Chicago attorney and chairman of the Illinois Board of Education. Ruiz will speak on the conference theme, “Championing Hispanic Higher Education Success: A National Imperative for the 21st Century.”

Ruiz is a partner at Drinker Biddle Gardner Carton, where he specializes in corporate law and also serves as chief legal counsel to the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus. He is a past president of the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois, and past chairman of the Hispanic Lawyers Scholarship Fund of Illinois. Ruiz also has been recognized as a rising star by Chicago Lawyer and Crain’s Chicago Business magazines.

Conference registration is still open and on-site registration will be available as well. HACU officials are expecting 1,200 conference attendees.
