King of Spain Bestows Honor on William and Mary Professor

WILLIAMSBURG Va.

The king of Spain is honoring a College of William and Mary professor with his country’s highest cultural achievement award.

George Greenia is a professor of modern languages and literature who specializes in studies of the Spanish Middle Ages.

At a ceremony in Washington last week, Greenia was awarded the Cross of Isabel the Catholic.

University spokeswoman Erin Zagursky says Greenia is a former Franciscan brother who has worked at William and Mary for 26 years.

During the past three summers, he has led undergraduate students from William and Mary on a 500-mile trek retracing the Christian pilgrimage route across northern Spain.
