5 Finalists for Luna Community College President

LAS VEGAS N.M.

A search committee has recommended five candidates for consideration as the next president of Luna Community College.

The committee on Friday forwarded the names of the applicants to the school’s board of trustees, which will choose a successor to Leroy Sanchez, who retired at the end of last year.

The five finalists are Dan Chacon, vice president of student support with San Luis Obispo, Calif.-based Cuesta College; James Alarid, a professor and director of a leadership institute at New Mexico Highlands University; Hans Kuss, former president of Maysville Community and Technical College in Kentucky and who was fired as Luna’s student services counselor; E. Clayton Alred, vice president of instruction at Odessa College in Odessa, Texas; and Sharon Caballero, former Highlands president.

Sigfredo Maestas, Luna’s interim president, said the board would interview the candidates during the next few weeks.

Maestas, who was president of Northern New Mexico Community College in Espanola for 13 years before retiring in 2005, was appointed Luna’s interim president last June.

He replaced Gilbert Sena as interim president. Sena was placed on leave last May, seven months after he was appointed interim president.
