State lawmakers have given final approval for $10 million in grants to four North Dakota colleges.
The money is helping to pay for so-called “centers of excellence” projects.
North Dakota State University is getting a $1.5 million grant to help develop different varieties of canola seed for biofuels and industrial oils.
NDSU is also getting a $2 million grant for research into improved surface coatings.
The University of North Dakota is getting a $2.5 million grant for a medical device that could aid stroke victims by dissolving blood clots.
Lawmakers also endorsed giving UND $1.5 million for an aerial drone research project.
Minot State University was awarded $2.1 million for a data and research center that companies may use for remote data storage.
Lake Region State College in Devils Lake got $400,000 to help develop and market equipment that can do pinpoint application of manure fertilizer.
The Legislature’s Budget Section voted to endorse all six projects. The votes represent the final level of review for the grants.
They’ve been previously approved by the Board of Higher Education, the state Emergency Commission and the board of the state Commerce Department’s economic development foundation.
