COVID-19 has demonstrated that technology is a bridge to sustaining a degree of normalcy in our lives. Institutions were able to switch almost overnight to online instruction and services only because of advances in technology, showing how critical having prepared professionals to address world problems is. According to the 2021 study “Women Chief Technology Officers in Community Colleges” by Monica D. Wiggins, the prevalence of technology today requires skilled technology workers — more than ever before — to secure, design, maintain and upgrade an ever-increasing number of advanced technological devices and programs.

This Professor Introduces Women to STEM By Bridging Engineering and Health Care
Currently, women represent 15–18% of the STEM workforce but 85% of the health care field. As the director of Florida Poly’s Health Systems Engineering program, Dr. Grisselle Centeno hopes to encourage more women to opt for STEM careers by developing a bridge between health care and engineering.

The S.T.E.M. Pipeline Test: Will Underrepresented Groups Be Left at the Station as the Tech Train Takes Off?
Years of talking about and organizing around diversifying the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (S.T.E.M.) pipeline is about to be put to the test immediately in cities like Miami. The tech train is leaving the station and while it is wonderful for those who will be on the board with lucrative economic opportunities, it may further marginalize those who are left back at the station of occupational segregation and economic stratification.

As the summer closes and college campuses across the country come roaring back to life, the demands for an academy that better reflects the full diversity of the student body and their own experiences will no doubt come center stage once again. The demands for a diverse faculty are growing and will further create division between the student body and university administration if they are not addressed in a more urgent manner.
