Experiencing the Presidential Election as an International Student
As an international student during the 2016 presidential election, I had very little idea what was happening in the year that preceded it, but it all sounded too complicated – electoral votes, caucuses, nomination, national conventions, all were foreign concepts to me. And I vividly remember election night. I stayed up all night with a group of friends with all sorts of backgrounds and experiences processing the outcome and what it might mean to us. Emotions were heightened, many were crying. Boy was that a night.

International student enrollment has been challenged since well before the COVID-19 global pandemic brought the traditional higher education recruitment cycle to a halt in mid-March. It will only become more difficult if colleges and universities do not quickly determine and act upon ways to reach and serve the unique needs of this critically important student population.

New research found that an increase in applications and enrollment at one-third of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) over the past three years directly correlates to the current social and political climate created under President Donald J. Trump’s presidency.

The ‘Weaker Sex’? #FACTS
As my last blog post, I want to leave you with a challenge – a challenge that, in the spirit of this blog, is at the intersection of diversity, education and health, and, I believe that, if accepted, can help initiate change we are sorely in need of today. The challenge is based on a question that I have asked myself on and off throughout my life. This question has been on my mind more and more recently as a result of the political and social climate in the US and my work focused on women’s health. The question?“Who is the ‘weaker sex?’”
