Six Things HBCUs Can Do to Increase Alumni Philanthropic Support
Kudos to all those HBCUs fortunate enough to be included on MacKenzie Scott’s mega gift list, along with lesser-known donors and corporate grant makers. For those institutions that were not among the recipients of such largesse, I challenge you to focus on transforming your alumni into consistent givers who may someday become mega givers.

Proposing a Concept of the Black Tax to Understand the Experiences of Blacks in America
The protests occurring in many cities in America to call attention to the systemic racism in society has provoked us to critically reflect on our experiences as Black men in this country. This cathartic process has led us to believe that as African Americans we are involuntarily mandated to pay a “Black tax.” This term is not new. In fact, it has been primarily associated with a family member who has advanced to a high socioeconomic status and who provides monetary support to other family members. Some have used this term to underscore the ways in which discrimination has impacted the financial standing of African Americans. Our conceptualization of the Black tax differs from the ways it has been used previously.

As a Ph.D. candidate expecting to graduate this semester, I have found myself constantly reflecting on the impact joining Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Inc. had on me. My entry point to higher education is tied to my experiences as an undergraduate student leader. My involvement on campus began after I joined my fraternity.

Study Reveals Bias against Female Basketball Players at HBCUs
A new study by a Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) professor indicates that women’s basketball teams at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are penalized at higher rates than teams from other institution types, suggesting that long-standing assumptions of racial bias in college athletics could be true.
