Meharry Medical College-Center for Women’s Health Research (Tenn.) has received a $1 million gift from the Wal-Mart Foundation. The funds will help advance work in diseases that disproportionately affect women of color.

Michigan State University has been awarded a $2.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to help seasonal and migrant worker youth achieve educational goals. With these funds, MSU will be able to provide educational services to 70 eligible students each year through the university’s High School Equivalency Program.

The New Mexico Higher Education Department has awarded $3.5 million to support nursing programs at 17 New Mexico public colleges and universities. One of the goals for the Nursing Enhancement Funds is to increase the number of nurses serving Hispanic and American Indian communities.

Saint Augustine’s College (N.C.) has received a grant of $27,000 from the Voices of Episcopal Women’s Project. The funds will be used to highlight the women who have supported the college.

Volkswagen of America has donated $5.75 million to Stanford University (Calif.) to create the Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Lab. The new program will support automotive teaching and research at the university.

Talladega College (Ala.) has received a $83,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to address health disparities among minorities. The grant is part of an initiative by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to address health care disparities among the nation’s various ethnic groups.

The University of California, Los Angeles has been given a $30 million endowment gift from the Herb Alpert Foundation to support its school of music. In honor of the donor, UCLA renamed the school The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. The endowment is the largest ever made to the arts in the UC system and the single largest gift to music higher education in the Western United States.

The University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Minority Health has been awarded a five-year, $4.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health Specifically, the funds will be used to improve the translation of scientific findings into interventions that will contribute to the elimination of racial and ethnic health disparities.

Winston-Salem State University (N.C.) has been awarded a five-year, $4.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to establish a center to promote a research initiative to improve the health of minorities. The center will work to eliminate health disparities nationwide.
