Professional Appointments

Dr. Sidney A. Ribeau has been appointed president of Howard University in Washington, D.C., effective Aug. 1. He currently serves as president of Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Ribeau earned a bachelor’s from Wayne State University and a master’s and doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

DR. ANGELA DURANTE has been named provost at Saint Xavier University (Ill.), effective in July. She currently serves as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Lewis University (Ill.). Durante earned a bachelor’s from New Jersey City University and a master’s and doctorate from Fordham University.

JOANNE EPPS has been named dean of Temple University’s Beasley School of Law (Pa.), effective July 1. She currently serves as a professor at the law school. Epps earned a bachelor’s from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., and a law degree from Yale University.

DR. DAMIAN FERNÁNDEZ has been appointed provost and executive vice president of academic affairs of Purchase College (N.Y.), effective Aug. 1. Fernández received a bachelor’s from Princeton University, a master’s from the University of Florida and a doctorate from the University of Miami.

DR. DEBORAH E. MCDOWELL has been named director of the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies at the University of Virginia. She also serves as the Alice Griffin Professor of Literary Studies at the university. McDowell earned a bachelor’s from Tuskegee University and a master’s and doctorate from Purdue University.

DR. JOHN ORR has been named senior vice president and provost of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (Mass.). Most recently, he served as the institute’s provost ad interim. Orr earned a bachelor’s from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a master’s from Stanford University and a doctorate from UIUC.
