Following are some recent awards and scholarships given to Latinos by various organizations in recent weeks:

AWARDS

• U. S. Representative Ruben Hinojosa (D-TX) and Rex Tillerson, Exxon Mobil chairman and chief executive officer were honored on Capitol Hill during the 11th Annual Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards.  The annual award honors leadership in education for Latinos and for inspiring a new generation of Hispanic leaders in the United States, and recognizes more than 20 outstanding students from the region  

• Carlos Blanco, a May 2008 graduate of YES Prep School –Southeast in Houston, was the essay contest winner of the National Association of Hispanic Publications. He highlighted the influence of Latin America on his own life in his winning essay, “he Manifestation of Culture.”  Blanco won six Continental Airlines tickets to travel anywhere in the U.S. where Continental flies. In addition, his essay will be posted on the NAHP website, as well as published in many NAHP member newspapers around the United States. NAHP is a nonprofit trade advocacy organization.

SCHOLARSHIPS 

• McDonald’s announced the selection of four Hispanic high school seniors who will each receive a college scholarship of $100,000 to fulfill their college dreams.  The students – selected for their academic achievement, financial need and community service – will be awarded $25,000 per year for the next for years beginning this fall.  The four scholarship recipients are: Brigitte Morales, Miami, Fla., attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology majoring in Chemical Engineering, Samuel A. Cruz, Union City, N.J, attending Ramapo College majoring in Biochemistry, Brian Campos, Brooklyn, N.Y. attending Harvard University majoring in Neurobiology, Maira Mercado, Riverside, Calif., attending Claremont McKenna College majoring in Economics and Mathematics

• Ten recent high school graduates have been awarded $1,000 college scholarships from the Tulare County Latino Peace Officers Association[a1] , Visalia, Calif.  All are planning to seek careers in law enforcement or other related fields of medicine, firefighting, teaching and physical  therapy. The recipients are: Christina Gamboa, Sandy Reynoso, Marisol Jimenez, Courtney Haun, Amanda Lopez, Julie Gonzalez, Brook Garcia, Cristina Olea, Melanie Gonzalez, Corey Harris

• Eleven students of Puerto Rican descent were recently awarded National Puerto Rican Day Parade Scholarships from the City University of New York’s Hostos Community College.  The scholarships were awarded by the New York Daily News at Hostos Community College's Honors Convocation and by Banco Popular. Each student received $1,000 from these sponsors. The recipients are scheduled to graduate between June 2008 and June 2009. Their overall grade point average is 3.5 or higher. The awardees are: Amaryllis de Jesus,  Mirayza Morell, Yahaira Rodriguez, Soleynys Baez,  Frankter Natera,  Alex Ramirez,, Ineliz Mujica, Sunil Narain, Eduardo Ruiz, Jennifer Sola, Elisa M. Alvalle. 

• Sallie Mae, announced the 36 regional winners of the Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards “Leadership” category. They will receive grants ranging from $1,000 to $8,000. The Youth Awards are open to graduating high school seniors of Hispanic/Latino descent (at least one parent) who maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. In 12 regions across the country, 252 Youth Awardees will receive more than $500,000 in total grants after being selected from an original pool of thousands of applicants.
