The Wal-Mart Foundation has announced a $4.2 million grant to support programs to increase first-generation student success at historically Black colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions and tribal colleges and universities.
The grant went to the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP) and awards 30 colleges sums of $100,000 towards improving student retention and academic success.
In conjunction with this grant, Wal-Mart Foundation President Margaret McKenna also announced the foundation is making support for first-generation college students a priority for its higher education-based philanthropy.
“Minority-serving institutions, in addition to their vital role of educating more than a third of the nation’s students of color, are playing an increasingly important role in educating first-generation students,” said IHEP President Michelle Asha Cooper. “The Wal-Mart Foundation’s support will be key to building additional capacity for participating institutions to craft cohesive academic success programs for this critical student population.”
