CALIFORNIA POLYTECHNIC STATE UNIVERSITY, POMONA, has received a $4.1 MILLION grant from the U.S. Department of Education to help the university address the national shortage of professionals ready to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The funding is intended to help Hispanic and low-income students enter the STEM fields.

MONTGOMERY COLLEGE (Md.) has received a $100,000 grant from the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy to help combat teen pregnancy among college students. The two-year pilot project will develop a model that addresses student attitudes about pregnancy.

NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY has been awarded a $902,000 grant from the Institute for Homeland Security and Workforce Development for the university’s Department of Criminal Justice. The university will use the funds to develop courses that address the identification of terrorist/threat groups in rural and local jails; stress related issues that impact rural volunteers and their families; manage principles unique to rural and volunteer first responders; and develop initiatives for rural and volunteer first responders and their families.

THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BAKERSFIELD, has received a $10.4 MILLION grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to participate in a national study designed to improve the health of children. The study will evaluate the effects of environmental and genetic factors on child and human health in the United States.

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS researchers have received a $2.2 million grant from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory in Ohio to study the causes of jet engine failure and how to build stronger, more durable engines.

THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT EL PASO has received a $2 million gift from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund to establish a desalination and water management research program. UTEP’s Center for Inland Desalination Systems will seek to establish the university as a leader in the field.
