Texas A&M University System regents have accepted the resignation of president Elsa Murano and named the CEO of their Galveston campus as interim president of the flagship school.

The 49-year-old Murano resigned Sunday, less than two weeks after a scathing performance review.

Murano was the first Hispanic and first female president in the 132-year history of Texas A&M, which didn’t admit women on an equal basis until 1971.

The appointment of Dr. Bowen Loftin was announced Monday after the board of regents met in executive session. Loftin has been vice president and CEO at Texas A&M University at Galveston since 2005.
