Growth in Service Providers and HighSpeed Access Routes
Boosts Internet Population in U.S.

WASHINGTON
The population of Internet users in the United States increased by 52 percent in 2000, to 68.7 million people, according to a new study released by Telecommunications Reports International (TRI). TRI credits the strong growth to gains in both the paid dial-up Internet service providers (ISP) and high-speed access via cable modem or DSL (digital subscriber line) connections.
Despite the business closures of some DSL provider companies, growth in that sector was considered high, according to Amy Fickling, managing
editor of TRI.
The study predicted that America Online is expected to raise its ISP fee by 8 percent in 2001 and warned that other paid dial-up services may follow AOL's lead.n
