IN MEMORIAM: Dr. Myles Brand

Dr. Myles Brand, who fired Bobby Knight as Indiana University basketball coach and went on to become an NCAA president, died Wednesday of pancreatic cancer at age 67.

The first former university president to run college sports' largest governing body, Brand worked to change the perception that sports programs supersede academics and earned praise for his efforts.

 

This past January, Brand broke the news that he had cancer at the NCAA convention and continued to handle the organization's day-to-day operations, despite undergoing treatment. NCAA officials, who announced his death, were not ready to say who would replace Brand or when they may begin searching for a successor.

Brand spoke to Diverse Senior Writer Ronald Roach for the April 8, 2004 issue of Black Issues in Higher Education (the predecessor to Diverse: Issues in Higher Education) about college athletics, academics and the NCAA. The following is a text of the interview:
