Ghanaian King Helps Dedicate University’s African Studies Program
PRINCESS ANNE, Md.
The king of the Republic of Ghana’s Asante region helped dedicate the University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s new African American and African studies program last month.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II received an honorary degree at the university’s commencement.
“A people without knowledge of their history are like a tree without roots,” the king said. “We who are descendants of this illustrious culture are charged not to forget our roots.”
Three years in the making, the program will be based on a liberal arts curriculum including science, language and fine arts. Its creators say it will prepare students for a number of careers including diplomatic service, teaching or law.
