California Lutheran University professors Dr. Ali Akbari, Dr. Myungsook Klassen and Dr. Russell Stockard received a $200,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. The grant will be used to research why minorities and women are severely underrepresented in information technology careers.

The Department of Educational Opportunity Programs at Creighton University (Neb.) has received more than $1 million in continued federal funding from the U.S. Department of Education. The money will be used to support the department's four programs: Classic Upward Bound; Upward Bound Math and Science Center; Educational Opportunity Center; and Educational Talent Search.

Hampton University School of Nursing (Va.) was awarded $1,041,764 from the Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Nursing. The grant will be used to support the nursing doctoral degree program.

Mississippi Valley State University has been awarded $70,000 from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center to host a summer science and technology academy for grades 8-10. The academy is designed to develop programs of science and math enrichment for minority youth in the Mississippi Delta.

Moraine Valley Community College (Ill.) has received four grants totaling $409,480. The money will be used to support a variety of programs at the college including those targeting adult students who are reading below the ninth grade level and economically disadvantaged youth from the college's surrounding communities.

Winston-Salem State University (N.C.) has received a $330,000 gift from the Forsyth Medical Center Foundation. The gift will be used to endow a chair in the university's School of Health Sciences. In addition, the School of Education received $161,000 from the U.S. Department of Education to renew a project involving using technology in the classroom.
