Professional Appointments

Dr. Earlene Armstrong, a professor of entomology at the University of Maryland College Park, has been selected by President Bush as one of 10 national recipients of the 2001 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. Armstrong earned bachelor's and master's from North Carolina Central University and a doctorate from Cornell University.

Michael E. Costa has been selected as the first head football coach when Saint Augustine's College in North Carolina reinstitutes its football program. Costa most recently served as a defensive coordinator at Elizabeth City State University. Costa earned a bachelor's from Norfolk State University, a master's from West Chester State University and a second master's from Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.
 
Dr. Winston C. Doby has been appointed vice president for educational outreach for the University of California system. Doby has served in many positions at UCLA, including assistant track coach and, most recently, vice chancellor of student affairs.  He earned a bachelor's in mathematics, a master's in education and a doctorate in higher education administration, all from UCLA.

Kimberly M. Reese has been appointed assistant director of student development services at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Previously, she was the coordinator of the student leadership development and volunteer services program. Reese earned a bachelor's in early childhood education and a master's in early childhood curriculum and instruction, both from Xavier University of Louisiana.

Peter Sylver has been named executive assistant to the president for government and corporate relations at Hofstra University in New York. Previously he was associate dean for administration at Hofstra's school of law.  Sylver earned a bachelor's from John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a juris doctorate from Hofstra
University.

Dr. Charles E. Young has been named president of Allen University in Columbia, S.C. Young has been an AME minister of Ebenezer Church in Charleston, S.C. Young earned a bachelor's from Virginia Union University, a master's of divinity from Columbia International University in South Carolina and a doctorate from Westminster
Theological Seminary in Philadelphia.
