In Memoriam: Education Advocate Dies

In Memoriam:  Education Advocate DiesRep. Patsy Mink, D-Hawaii, senior Democrat on the House of Representatives’ higher education panel and a key figure in the creation of Title IX, died late last month of pneumonia.
Mink, 74, was the ranking Democrat on the House Subcommittee on 21st Century Competitiveness, which oversees federal higher education programs.
First elected in 1964, she played a role in enactment of the law that sought to promote equality for women in education, particularly athletics.
After leaving Congress in the mid-1970s, she returned to the House in 1990.
“Patsy was a vigorous spokesperson for quality schools and expanded opportunity for higher education for all Americans,” said Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., senior Democrat on the Education and the Workforce Committee. Mink was serving her 12th term.
