Internet2 Deployed at Southern University
BATON ROUGE, La.
Officials at Southern University have announced the deployment of Internet2 connectivity and services at the historically Black institution in Baton Rouge, La. The deployment marks the newest and one of the few Internet2 programs at a historically Black school. Internet2 is a consortium being led by more than 200 universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of a next-generation Internet.
The Internet2 connectivity supports high-speed data and video connectivity between Southern University and other Internet2 institutions, eliminating network traffic jams. One particular Internet2 project includes the statewide LearnNet program that involves videoconferencing.
Huey Kenneth Lawson, Southern's Office of Technology and Network Services director, says the project was funded through a grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents in association with Gov. Mike Foster's Information Technology Initiative. Key individuals at Southern University responsible for the implementation and management of the Internet2 service in the Office of Technology and Network Services include Zsaknor "Randy" Powe, network systems administrator, and Terrence Cyriaque, network engineer. The Louisiana Board of Regents, LaNET and BellSouth actively participated in the implementation.
