Arizona State University's College of Business will receive a $50 million gift from Wm. Polk Carey, chairman of New York City-based investment firm W.P. Carey & Co. LLC and grandson of John Samuel Armstrong, the legislative founder of Arizona State. The gift will endow the W.P. Carey School of Business at ASU.

Fisk University (Tenn.) received a $100,000 grant from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation to go toward the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship Fund for academically talented and financially needy students. In addition, the BP Foundation, the charitable arm of BP America Inc., awarded the university an unrestricted donation of $100,000.

The Institute for Recruitment of Teachers (IRT), an educational outreach program of Phillips Academy, has been awarded a $750,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support the recruitment of outstanding minority college students and to prepare them to enter graduate programs leading to teaching careers.

Johns Hopkins University's (Md.) Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies will receive $4 million from publisher and diplomat Philip Merrill to establish the Philip Merrill Center for Strategic Studies.

A Shaw University (N.C.) and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill partnership to address the elimination of health disparities among minorities will receive $6 million over five years from the National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities.

The College of Business at Southern University and A&M College (La.), in collaboration with the Office of Technology and Network Services received $469,000 from the Center for Information Technology Initiative as part of the governor's IT Initiative. The money will be used to develop new academic programs in E-Business, training opportunities for small businesses in the latest software applications and the construction of high technology classrooms and laboratories.
