A Year in Review: Milestones

MilestonesHistorically Black Lincoln University in Pennsylvania kicked off its 150th anniversary celebration in April. The sesquicentennial celebration will last through May 2004 and will encompass a variety of special events. The University of Pennsylvania became the first and only Ivy League institution to establish a criminology department. The University of California-Santa Barbara announced that it will offer the nation's first doctoral program in Chicano studies. The graduate program, which will also include a master of arts track, will be offered by UCSB's Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies, long a pioneering department in ethnic studies.
Sylvester Croom became the first Black head football coach in the Southeastern Conference in early December, accepting an offer to take over the program at Mississippi State University. Croom, who had been the Green Bay Packers' running backs coach, joins four other Black head football coaches in Division I-A. The SEC was the only Bowl Championship Series conference never to have had a Black head coach.
