Senate Approves More Than $1.5 Million for TSU
More than $1.5 million in federal funding has been approved for Tennessee State University as part of the Omnibus Appropriations bill that passed the U.S. Senate last month.
The bill provides $1 million for the African American Museum and Library expansion, $500,000 for new communications department facilities and $450,000 for the Appalachian Horticulture Research Unit, a joint project with the University of Tennessee.
The bill, which provides funding for fiscal year 2004, was approved by a 65-28 margin by senators.
“This funding reinforces the importance of the work being conducted in many areas of study at TSU,” Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tenn., said. “These funds will help TSU utilize new technology and improved communications as part of its strong commitment to innovation and excellence in education.” Cooper was a supporter of the TSU programs while the legislation was being debated in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“From facility improvements for colleges and universities to enhanced commuter transit projects, this funding will go a long way to support education and technology initiatives in Middle Tennessee,” said Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., in a statement released after the bill’s passage.
