Delaware State University's department of chemistry received a four-year $750,000 research contract from Bear, Del.-based manufacturer Ion Power to research ways in which certain materials can be recovered and recycled from end-of-life fuel cell systems.

The McHenry County College (Ill.) Center for Commerce and Economic Development (CCED) received a $440,000 Employee Training Investment Program grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The grant will be used to upgrade the skills of 2,208 employees at 35 participating McHenry County Area Training Network companies. The Training Network was formed in 2003 to meet McHenry County's needs for a well-trained labor force.
Nash Community College (N.C.) is the recipient of a $1 million grant through the U.S. Department of Commerce. This economic development grant will assist Nash Community College in the construction of a Science and Technology Center whose mission is to train students in state-of-the-art classrooms and labs to meet local work-force needs, as well as attract businesses to the Nash/Rocky Mount area needing employees with these skills.

Rice University (Texas) was awarded a $5 million grant from the Department of Defense to invent next-generation tools for the modern bioengineer and life scientist that will rapidly identify proteins and viruses in minute detail. The Rice scientists plan to develop a multimodality spectroscope for nanoscale optical imaging of the structure and function of peptides, proteins and viruses in their native environment.

Shaw University (N.C.) received a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education for the development of an Upward Bound Program, to serve low-income students of Edgecombe County, N.C. The program provides students with tools needed to become successful throughout their tenure in secondary education and subsequently achieve success in a program of postsecondary education.
