Moraine Valley Community College (Ill.) has received two grants — a $124,172 Education-to-Careers grant and a $2,000 Walmart Foundation Literacy grant — to help with two college programs. The $124,172 grant from the Illinois Board of Education will provide another year of funding for the college's Education-to-Careers program as well as funding for the college's centralized internship office. The Walmart Foundation grant will provide additional instructional materials and supplies to the college's Community Literacy program.
The North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Waste Management Institute (WMI) received a $615,000 five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, Savannah River Site (SRS). The grant will be used to train students who will work in environmental and waste management fields. Seven historically Black colleges and universities have been selected to participate in a new grant initiative to develop community service and service learning programs that address health disparities in racial and ethnic communities. The grants of $90,000 per institution, funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service under its Learn and Serve America: Higher Education Program in partnership with the United Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation/Health and Community Development Division, will increase the quality and quantity of community service and service learning practices on campuses and in surrounding communities. The selected institutions include: Benedict College (S.C.), Dillard University (La.), Lane College (Tenn.), LeMoyne Owen College (Tenn.), Rust College (Miss.), Wiley College (Texas), and Xavier University (La.).
Penn State University's Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Meharry Medical College (Tenn.) were recently awarded a $5 million collaborative research grant from the National Institutes of Health to establish research centers for the study of minority-based issues in reproductive health. The goal of the Meharry-Penn State U54 Cooperative Reproductive Science Center is to establish a premier clinical research center devoted to minority-based issues in endocrinology.
