There is more to these four words than meets the eye. Yes, with this edition, Black Issues In Higher Education magazine becomes Diverse: Issues In Higher Education. But the change involves more than just a new name. Diverse, as the name implies, will seek to examine a larger and broader array of issues affecting all people of color in higher education. Our coverage will expand to be more pluralistic, inclusive and multicultural. The interconnectedness, as well as the dichotomy of issues affecting African-Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanics and American Indians will be presented in greater detail. Diverse will be just that!
In our cover story, “Dissecting Diversity,” a number of scholars weigh in on the meaning of diversity, the future of affirmative action and group identity. We are certain you will find this two-part interview compelling and thought provoking. Their conversation highlights the complexities of diversity and group identity. Diverse aims to shed light and provide clarity on these issues and more.
After more than two decades of publishing, Black Issues has taught us a great deal and we are incorporating those “lessons learned” into a new philosophy and editorial treatment, one that our readers have told us is reflective of the current climate in higher education. Our news coverage will be more expansive. Special reports will delve deeper into their subjects to uncover the larger multicultural and multiethnic perspectives. A new set of voices will be heard offering perspectives that have had
only limited exposure until now. With this issue, we officially make the transition and look forward to a bright and exciting future.
