Professional Appointments

Dr. Elsa Nuñez has been appointed president of Eastern Connecticut State University. She is currently vice chancellor for academic and student affairs for the University of Maine System. Nuñez holds a bachelor’s from Montclair State University, a master’s from Fairleigh Dickenson University and a doctorate from Rutgers University.

Tracie Alcorn-Abraham has been appointed executive director of the office of admissions and recruitment at Southern University (La.). Previously, she served in the position on an interim basis. Alcorn-Abraham earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Southern.

Dr. Lowell B. Catlett has been appointed dean of the College of Agriculture and Economics at New Mexico State University. He had been serving on an interim basis. Catlett earned a bachelor’s from West Texas State University, a master’s from NMSU and a doctorate from Iowa State University.

Dr. Alice P. Gast has been appointed president of Lehigh University (Pa.) effective Aug. 1. Currently, she is vice president for research and associate provost at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Gast earned a bachelor’s from the University of Southern California and a master’s and doctorate from Princeton University.

Dr. Dru C. Gladney has been appointed president of the Pacific Basin Institute at Pomona College (Calif.). Gladney holds two bachelor’s from Westmont College, two master’s from Fuller Theological Seminary and a master’s and doctorate from the University of Washington.

Dr. Jerome Goodwin has been named registrar at North Carolina Central University. Most recently, he served as registrar of Virginia State University. Goodwin earned a bachelor’s from Saint Augustine’s College, an MBA from NCCU and a doctorate from Nova Southeastern University.

Dr. Esin Gulari has been appointed dean of the College of Engineering and Science at Clemson University (S.C.). Most recently, she served as a professor of chemical engineering and materials science at Wayne State University. She earned a bachelor’s from Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey, and a master’s and doctorate from the California Institute of Technology.

Dr. Mohammad Qayoumi has been named president of California State University, East Bay. Currently, he serves as vice president for administration and finance and chief financial officer at CSU-Northridge. Qayoumi earned a bachelor’s from the American University of Beirut, and three master’s degrees and a doctorate from the University of Cincinnati.

Janelle Simmons has been named director of orientation and first-year experience in the division of student affairs at North Carolina Central University. Most recently, she was assistant director of student orientation and family programs at Stony Brook University. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stony Brook.
