Professors be Aware

A student Web site that ranks professors based on the number of As through Fs given out in each class is now focusing its attention on California, after recently winning a court case against the University of California system.

PickaProf.com allows students to shop for the “easiest” classes by comparing the average grades given out by professors in similar classes. The project was started in 2000 by the son of Dr. William H. Cunningham, a former systemwide chancellor for the University of Texas.

What impact will PickaProf.com have on how professors grade, if any? In many cases, a class that doesn’t meet minimum enrollment requirements gets cancelled. The concern is that the Web site will pressure professors to inflate grades to attract students.
