Professional AppointmentsSouthern University at New Orleans Gets New Chancellor
Dr. Joseph Bouie Jr. has been selected to become the chancellor of Southern University at New Orleans. He is the fifth chancellor and the first alumnus to hold the position. Bouie has served on the social work faculty for 23 years, as well as in other administrative positions at the university. He holds a bachelor’s in social work from Southern University at New Orleans, a master’s in social work from Tulane University and a doctorate in administration and planning from Atlanta University.
Dr. Reginald S. Avery is the new provost and vice president for academic affairs at Alma College in Michigan. Avery has more than 25 years of classroom and administrative experience, most recently at Kentucky State University, where he was vice president for academic affairs. Avery holds a bachelor’s in sociology from North Carolina A&T State University, a master’s in social work from George Williams College and a doctorate in social work with a specialty in program planning and administration from Brandeis University.
Dr. James R. Kitchen has been appointed vice president of student affairs at San Diego State University. Kitchen comes to San Diego State from the University of Kansas, where he was associate vice chancellor of student affairs and dean of students. Kitchen earned both his bachelor’s and his master’s from Eastern Illinois University, and a doctorate in education from Northern Arizona University.
Pelonomi Khumoetsile-Taylor has been named director of diversity and inclusion at Bunker Hill Community College in Massachusetts. Prior to joining Bunker Hill, Khumoetsile-Taylor was advocacy and public policy coordinator for the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts and an adjunct professor at Capital Community Technical College in Connecticut. She earned an associate’s in public administration from the Greater Hartford Community College, a bachelor’s in government from Wesleyan University and a juris doctorate from the University of California-Berkeley.
Lisa Taylor-Henderson has been elected to the St. Louis Community College Board of Trustees. Henderson, a claims specialist for State Farm Insurance Co., has worked for the company 23 years. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Columbia College.
Emily London-Jones has been appointed director of the University of New Orleans Office of Student Financial Aid. Previously, London-Jones was associate director of student financial aid at Xavier University in New Orleans. She earned her bachelor’s in education and her master’s in guidance and counseling, both from Xavier University of Louisiana.
Dr. Cecil R. Taliaferro has been named vice president of academic affairs and student development at Harold Washington College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago. Most recently he was the associate vice president for academic affairs at the Community College of Philadelphia. Taliaferro earned a bachelor’s from Virginia Union University, a master’s in international and developmental education and a doctorate in higher education administration, both from the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Frederick D. White, a professor of business administration at Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce, Fla., is one of the first two faculty members at the college to be honored by the college’s new endowed teaching chair program. The program recognizes and rewards outstanding teaching.
