Professor Weatherspoon’s article (see “Black Male Student-Athletes Owe Themselves, Forefathers More,” Jan. 25) provides a key message to families raising Black males and to institutions of education that provide education and academic opportunities. “Education is the key to fulfilling most dreams,” his final statement, is the key message. Going pro in any sport comes down to a numbers game, and most Black males won’t make it. More families need to understand this equation and guide and mentor young males to excel in the education environment and contribute to their family, community and society in ways other than sports and entertainment.
