The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has awarded $4.5 million in grants to 15 community service projects, including programs at Duke University, the New York University School of Medicine and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Each grant will be available for three years, at up to $100,000 per year.
Kansas State University has received a $1 million gift from E. Eugene Carter, a native of Wichita, Kan. The gift will establish the E. Eugene Carter Foundation Excellence for Women in Engineering Fund, which will repay the subsidized Stafford loans of 20 Hispanic women who earn engineering degrees at KSU.
The University of Minnesota has received a $5 million gift from Target Stores to support three capital campaigns. The gift will be used to build an addition to the Weisman Art Museum and to make improvements to the Carlson School of Management’s new undergraduate facility and TCF Bank Stadium.
The Center for Migrant Education at Texas State University-San Marcos has received a $2.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s College Assistance Migrant Program. The grant will fund a project designed to help migrant students attend and graduate from college.
The Tom Joyner Foundation has received a $10,000 gift from the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. The foundation plans to present the gift to North Carolina A&T State University. Harley-Davidson donated a total of $60,000 to the foundation in 2006.
The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey has received a $1 million gift from the Tim Reynolds Family Foundation to help fund research on spinal cord injuries. A donation from the foundation last year created the Tim Reynolds Family Spinal Cord Injury Laboratory.
The University of Pennsylvania Law School has received a $1 million
grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education to create an endowed professorship to study issues of civil rights and race relations. The Raymond Pace and Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander Professorship is the school’s first to be named after African-Americans.
