Stony Brook University

PETER-M-BAIGENTStony Brook University is one of America’s most dynamic public universities, a center of academic excellence and an essential part of the region’s economy.

A member of the Association of American Universities, Stony Brook is one of the 62 leading research institutions in North America and the co-manager of Brookhaven National Laboratory.

The university offers more than 200 undergraduate and 140 graduate programs and has more than 24,600 students.
Stony Brook’s 1,040-acre campus on Long Island’s North Shore encompasses not only the main academic areas
of the university, but also Stony Brook Medicine, which includes the five health sciences schools, Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, the Long Island State Veterans Home, and its major health care centers, programs and clinics. A Medical and Research Translation (MART) building, dedicated to imaging, neurosciences,
cancer care and research, and a new Hospital Pavilion and Children’s Hospital are set for completion in 2016.

Dr. Peter M. Baigent provides leadership, vision, strategic direction and policy planning for the
Division of Student Affairs, which is comprised of 350 employees (21 departments). The division is committed to student success and institutional excellence through close attention to student learning and data-driven operational
practices that are aligned with the university’s vision and mission. Guided by the divisions’ core values of care and respect, opportunity, access, and inclusiveness, collaboration and partnerships, personal and community responsibility, quality and excellence, the division fosters student success.

When told of Stony Brook’s inclusion, Baigent shared, “We’re honored to be selected among the 2015 Most Promising Places to Work in Student Aff airs at Research Institutions. We pride ourselves on empowering our staff to engage fully as active learners, responsible leaders, and contributing members of a diverse and dynamic campus community. As a division we work together to pursue excellence with fortitude, creativity, and we have the courage to adapt to changing needs and move beyond the status quo through continuous assessment and research.” Its pursuit of excellence through diversity, adaptation and continuous assessment is what makes Stony Brook University one of this year’s Most Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs for Research Institutions.
