JACKSON Miss.
Dr. Daniel W. Jones, vice chancellor for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, will take over as president of the American Heart Association on July 1.
Jones has been an association volunteer for more than 20 years. He was named president at the association’s annual meeting in April.
As president, he will serve as chief volunteer scientific and medical officer, responsible for medical, scientific and public health matters. Jones has served on the association’s national board of directors since 2003.
From 1985-92, Jones was a medical director at the Wallace Memorial Baptist Hospital in Pusan, Korea. He then joined the UMC faculty as assistant professor of medicine and director of clinical hypertension. He was named dean in 2003.
Jones earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Mississippi College in 1971, and a medical degree from UMC in 1975.
