University of Kansas Student Leaders will not be Impeached

LAWRENCE, Kan. ― The University of Kansas Student Senate has voted not to begin impeachment proceedings against three student leaders.

The senate voted Wednesday night to allow President Jessie Pringle, Vice President Zach George and Chief of Staff Adam Moon to remain in office. The Lawrence Journal-World reports an impeachment committee found no allegations of misconduct against the trio.

Last November, a student senate committee demanded the three be impeached after enough signatures from senators were collected to advance a five-page bill of impeachment against, largely because of what was seen as their reluctance to support demands to promote diversity on the campus. The bill featured 17 reasons why they should lose their positions.

Some students of color have complained that three student leaders excluded them and did not represent their voices.

Paper ballots were cast on whether to proceed with impeachment proceedings against each officer. It was announced the majority in each case was not to go forward, but the vote totals were shared.

The report also said their impeachment would set a dangerous precedent of removing officers from office because they aren’t popular.

After the impeachment efforts began last year, the three students released a list of diversity-related proposals they intend to pursue including some that the Senate has already taken action on.

Pringle said that she was pleased senators established a higher bar for impeachment.
