The Board of Governors for Higher Education has approved a tuition and fee hike of between 5 percent and 6 percent at the state’s two colleges and its university.
The increases takes effect during the 2008-2009 school year.
Under the proposal, tuition and fees for in-state students at the University of Rhode Island will increase by 6 percent, or almost $500 dollars. In-state students at Rhode Island College will also pay about 6 percent more, which adds up to roughly $300.
Room and board fees at both schools also will increase.
Tuition and fees at the Community College of Rhode Island will rise by about 5 percent, or about $150.
Board Chairman Frank Caprio says he’s worried the state is losing ground in its effort to keep a college education affordable.
