The National Science Foundation is giving the University of Hawaii $430,000 to hold a convention.
The grant will allow the university to host a four-day national conference on the Big Island to promote scientific competitiveness in the islands.
Hawaii Sen. Daniel Inouye announced approval of the grant for the conference which is to kick off on Nov. 5 in Waikoloa.
Inouye says federal experimental research programs have helped Hawaii become competitive in evolutionary ecology and genetics by focusing on the islands’ unique ecosystems.
The university’s competitive research team has so far received National Science Foundation grants totaling $18 million.
