Lawsuit: UW anesthesiologist faked credentials

SEATTLE

A federal lawsuit alleges that a University of Washington anesthesiologist faked his credentials.

The American Board of Anesthesiology says in the lawsuit filed this week that Dr. Ray P. Liao (lee-OW’) failed its written examination in 2004, 2005 and 2006, but that he’s been claiming since 2005 to be a board-certified anesthesiologist.

The lawsuit accuses Liao of forging his certificate, and notes that the certificate number actually belongs to a physician certified in 1992. Liao did not immediately return a call seeking comment, and a spokeswoman for UW Anesthesiology said she was unaware of the lawsuit and could not release any information about Liao.

The lawsuit asks that Liao stop claiming to be board-certified and to give up any money he made in so doing. It also seeks damages and attorney’s fees.
