Doing the Real Work in Higher Education Amidst Two Pandemics
As we stare down the double barrel of a global pandemic and historic levels of police brutality inflicted upon Black Indigenous People of Color, we are faced with the reality that neither problem is going away. In addition to massive school closures across the country, many disadvantaged groups—Black families in particular—have suffered disproportionately during these turbulent times.

Say Their Names, But Not the N-Word
The current reckoning about anti-Blackness in the United States is exposing the limits of solidarity. Millions of white and non-white people have marched and expressed support for Black Lives by saying the names of men and women brutally killed or shot in police custody. This powerful act of solidarity humanizes these victims while bearing witness to systemic racism. At the same time, faculty in some of our nation’s colleges and universities continue to defend the right to utter the N-word as part of their educational practice. This counterintuitive notion is not just tone-deaf to the national reckoning but harms the institutional culture, devalues the presence of Black faculty, staff and students, and compromises the moral credibility of the professoriate.

Steps Beyond Statements: Presidential Leadership in Building a Case for Inclusive Excellence
To say we live in interesting times is a vast understatement. How Institutions Can Better Respond to Campus Hate Crimes
As we gear up for what is likely to be the most challenging, start of the academic year we’ve ever seen, we must be vigilant and equipped to respond to incidents involving hate and/or explicit bias. With the persistence of our country’s sociopolitical unrest, coupled with a looming presidential election poised to cause greater dissidence, we should expect the tension to continue on our campuses.

Why Do I Have to Call You Doctor?
On the first day of class I introduce myself using my formal title and ask all student to respect that request. You often see some students have a sense of confusion and bewilderment as the general culture in the Pacific Northwest is laid back and less formal. Based on informal conversations with colleagues and friends, some of them have suggested that some people may think that I may be arrogant, on some ego trip, or maybe masking some deep sense of insecurity. But it is interesting that many White peers, colleagues, and students don’t take the time to think about it from my perspective. It never occurs to them that I may approach my interactions with them as a professor differently because I am a Black man.
