Remembering Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien, Champion of Affirmative Action
This past week, I was moved by the memorial for the late Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien. The first Asian American to head a major research university, University of California Berkeley, which he led from 1990 to 1997, he was remembered again on the tenth anniversary of the naming of an East Asian Library in his honor.

Poor in Rich Times: State Funding for Public Higher Education in California
In spring 2018, I woke up to an email announcing a proposed $61 million cut from the Governor’s Office to the California State University’s (CSU) 23-campus system’s requested budget for 2018-2019. I had long been baffled that a state so rich in resources – the sixth largest economy in the world – could be so poor when it came to supporting the single largest producer of the California’s workforce.

Harvard’s Asian Problem Does Not Justify the Blum Lawsuit
That lawsuit filed by White conservative Ed Blum using Asians as proxies to fight affirmative action may have revealed in discovery a complex and unique admissions process at Harvard. But using race to determine admissions is legal, and the suit doesn’t justify changing current law.

Being a Good Ally
Much has been said about the African-American graduate student at Yale who was reported by a White peer to campus police for napping in a common room. I can identify. In stating my sympathy as an Asian American, however, I appreciate that my circumstances are easier. A good ally takes care to avoid appropriating another person’s suffering.
