No problems were reported in a test of Virginia Tech’s emergency sirens.
University spokesman Michael Dame said the six sirens operated as designed in a 3-minute test Monday morning. The steady tone was followed by a recorded message saying that it was a test.
After a student gunman killed 32 people on campus on April 16, the university relied primarily on the warning sirens, e-mails and a Web site message to alert students to the danger.
The school has since installed an expanded emergency alert system designed to deliver text messages, voice mails, e-mails or online instant messages in an emergency. That system was retested last week after glitches were reported in testing last month.
