Washington TV Station Unveils Web Site at Howard University

WRC-TV, the NBC affiliate television station in Washington, D.C., last month unveiled its new community-oriented Web site at Howard University to highlight an academic partnership it’s starting with the Washington, D.C.-based historically Black institution. Officials from NBC4 launched the Web site from Howard’s $5 million, 21,000 square-foot iLab facility, and announced that NBC4 and the university will collaborate on a “cyber classroom” project. Howard students will gather in the iLab monthly for online conferences with NBC4 professionals from a variety of disciplines.
NBC4 officials also announced that the Web site, nbc4.com, will function as the portal through which Web users find local information, including community outreach events, live weather data at the neighborhood level, consumer information, news and marketplace information. The site also includes a self-publishing feature that allows neighborhood representatives to build an interactive community calendar.
“We have set out to design a site that has the community at its center. Everyone around the region can use the site to find wide-ranging information about what’s going on locally,” says Linda Sullivan, NBC4 president and general manager.
H. Patrick Swygert, president of Howard, welcomes the NBC4 partnership. “We are delighted that NBC4 has chosen to launch its new Internet portal site from the iLab at Howard University’s Technology Center,” Swygert says.
