The City University of New York (CUNY) will recognize more than 300 student-veterans for outstanding academic achievement at an event leading up to Veterans Day, Nov. 11 – part of a host of activities planned throughout November by the school to honor its more than 3,200 military veteran undergraduates and graduates.
City University of New YorkThe Central Office of Veterans Affairs will present the academic awards on Nov. 2 as part of a day-long CUNY Veterans Summit and Professional Networking & Resources Fair. Given each year since 2013, the awards recognize CUNY senior college student-veterans who have completed at least 90 credits with a 3.5 GPA or higher, and community college student-veterans who have met the same standard and completed at least 36 credits, according to the CUNY press release.
“CUNY is proud of its student-veterans and the accomplishments and rich life experience they bring to our campuses,” said interim chancellor Dr. Vita C. Rabinowitz. “The increasing number of veterans who choose CUNY is a testament to the services and resources we provide to support their success. We welcome them and proudly acknowledge their achievements.”
The Nov. 2 CUNY Veterans Summit will include the Veteran Academic Recognition presentations, which will be shown on screens throughout the day. In the afternoon, there will be a Veteran Professional Networking and Resource Fair that includes sessions on CUNY undergraduate and graduate admissions, financial aid and ROTC. Information will also be provided on STEM careers, career readiness, interview prep, wellness and veteran resources.
The 25 CUNY schools have a total of 3,237 student-veterans, an enrollment that has increased by more than 50 percent since 2010. The student-veterans are diverse in their personal backgrounds and military service in all branches of the U.S. armed forces.
