North Carolina Central University’s (NCCU) more than 250 mass communications students have a new training ground with the opening of a $1.86-million television studio on campus this week.

Unveiled to the campus and community on April 23, the state-of-the-art television studio will serve as a high-tech, high-touch facility for students to receive “extensive” training in audio and visual technology, camera operation, lighting, directing and on-camera presenting, according to NCCU.
“NCCU’s new television studio signals a shift in the way we will prepare our students who seek to become trained, job-ready, award-winning journalists,” said NCCU chancellor Dr. Johnson O. Akinleye. “This studio reflects a significant investment in intensive and extensive training through our mass communication program that now provides our students with enhanced practical instruction in a world-class, high intensity, hands-on learning environment.”
NCCU’s Department of Mass Communication has been recognized for the accomplishments of its students, including winning six awards at the Southern Regional Press Institute competition. The new studio reaffirms an institutional commitment to enhance students’ learning experiences.
“This facility reflects the university’s commitment to the idea that our students – and those [who] train and teach them – deserve to have access to the best equipment and facilities,” said Dr. Calvin L. Hall, chair of the Department of Mass Communication.
